Been Awhile

home
You may have noticed that the posts on this website came to a stop there for a bit and suddenly I'm back with a bunch of bracelet-making ideas. Well, it's sorta easy to explain. We upgraded our internet to fiber broadband. This was an awesome idea, except that…

August is Here!

home
Woohoo! August is here! There is so much to look forward to this month I can hardly keep up on it all. Currently we are in the 7th lunar month so we have all that going on. Tomorrow, the 2nd, I'm going down to find out details on my volunteering for Chinatown’s mid-autumn festivities. In case you forgot…

These Are The Breaks

home
Well, despite the song and title, for those who might worry, rest assured that nothing is broken. I just found the fastest way to break - I mean brake - when on my skateboard. These ARE the breaks! LOL! Here's what happened: So yesterday at approximately 7:30pm, I was still skateboarding along East Coast Park after being out there for about two hours. I had managed to cover more than 12.5 km of the park. Basically the entire park from one end to the other. But by 7:30, it's a bit dark out here in Singapore and I was on a bit of trail that had a few lights out. That's how it went from awesome to owwie fast…

Saying Goodbye To My Little Buddy

home
A lot has been going on and yes, that means a lot has gone on while not being posted about. Well, one thing in particular just happened and I'm not about to let it go by without a mention. Our beloved dog Trix passed away. His health decayed rapidly in just about a weeks’ time. Though his eyesight had been getting bad, he had always had a decent quality of life. Then something happened last week…

Three Years Already

home
This is a late post due to the fact I've been quite busy. On May 7th I celebrated my third year of being in Singapore, together with my wife and a couple of close friends. It's really hard to imagine that it's been three years that I've been in this country. I'm feeling really blessed to be here and to have learned so much…

Ideas Worth Exporting

home
If you're a regular reader of my page, you already know that I have discovered many things here in Singapore that I would consider to be better than in the US. It's really not that I hate the US, it's just they don't seem to be looking out for interests that I think might help them to improve. So I'm going to start a segment here called 'Ideas Worth Exporting' where we can talk about these ideas and how they make sense and perhaps get a dialogue started…

The Sunset That Changed Me

home
Back in 1986 on a beach in southern California I had an extraordinary life-changing event. It wasn't some crossroad where I had to make a choice but simply put, it was the right words at the right time. The image used for this post is nothing like the evening of this mind-altering event. I say that up front because there is much importance about what I was looking at. Mind you, this was years before there were camera phones or digital photography. However I'd have been reluctant to have shared the photo had one been taken, because it wasn't just what I had seen that made a difference, it was how it was making me feel. So now I want you to try to recreate this image in your mind…

I Love The Really Real Singapore

home
Since I was raised in America under the umbrella of free speech, I understand how important it is for society to speak up against injustice. I fully embrace the idea, however, that there are lines that need to be drawn to protect that same society. Now how to determine where those lines should be, I'm not sure, however, I am open to ideas. I bring this all up because a group posing as an alternative news outlet is lying repeatedly, though they simply claim to be "An online community that provides media coverage without censorship."...

Interesting Perspectives

A bit of a debate began on an FB post over Singapore's involvement in 'Singapore Day' in England. We got way off topic in a debate over whose country was better. I felt this was worth exploring and my comments would have been way too long to continue the debate on FB, so I'm bringing it here to be fair to the original person who posted it. First up, some excerpts from that conversation…

Score A Big Win For France

home
So I keep hearing people going on about how useless unions are. Oh and how America is so much more awesome than the rest of the world. Then I read about what's going on in France. Don't brag to me about the 40-hour weeks you have in the US, and let’s not forget that it was the unions that gave you them, as well the weekend, in the first place. France has a 35-hour work week…

A Measurement Of Greatness

home
Ok, it's time for a rant. I've been bike riding lately and when I tell my USA friends I've gone 75 km, they are all like "What? Speak English." Or ask to have me convert it or some other form of complaint. So here is my new formal response.

Could He Really Be So Dumb?

home
Dear Americans, next time you're cursing the high cost of your electricity bill, you should perhaps thank US Rep Joe Barton. This guy is a member of the House Committee on Energy and I found this image. At first I couldn't believe it was true. Like some joke that never happened…

Words Of Wisdom

home
I've been thinking about words of wisdom for quite some time now. I think it started when I was a teenager and realised I wanted to pass on what I had learned (or would learn) to my child should I have one someday. Well, years have since passed and I do have a few things I'd pass on to anyone who cares to read…

Let’s Grow Old Together

home
In case you haven't seen it yet, a friend’s production company, The Wedding Paparazzi, did a video interview with us a while back and released a teaser trailer on Valentine's Day. Have to say we’re really impressed and looking forward to the final production. In the meanwhile…

Are You Hungry?

home
I found this trailer for a movie online and it speaks so much of what I've believed for a while now. People who can't afford a decent meal are simply not being looked after like they should be. The argument goes that someone has seen another person in a nice car using food stamps and their thoughts go along the lines of how they must be cheating the system. It never occurs to them that…

Don't Nobody Want that!

home
Ok, this post is going to be a little vague deliberately to keep myself out of some hot water. I read a post that used this image… I threw in my two cents’ worth, partly being a smartass and partly because it's true that I feel not all people should go around wearing the minimal amount of clothing required. The very aged whose skin rolls over the strings of a bikini, or the really big… Like I seriously wouldn't want to see Honey Boo Boo's mom in one either, would you? And the phrase I had used was “it would make my eyes bleed”. Now it didn't stop there…

You Readers Could Be Making a Difference

home
There is an aspect of being an aspiring writer for this blog that I hadn't anticipated is now sorta bothering me. Before I explain exactly what that is, let me just say I am still enjoying the experience and look forward to more discoveries that I can share. Now I'm not delusional and think all my writing is gold…

Awol and a Message of Faith

home
Many years ago I carried stones in a leather bag hung around my neck. A medicine bag as the Indians (native Americans) would have called it. I wanted to believe that each stone had powers of healing or other magical properties. And for a time this worked…

Change From 2013

home
As you may have heard, I have a bit of a magpie tendency. That is to say if I see something shiny I will stop and perhaps (most likely) pick it up. As a result I do manage to find a bit of change on the ground. So if you recall from 2012…

Labrador Retrievers!

home
Our day started out with some corny jokes. Perhaps it was the lack of sleep from a late night after the New Year’s Eve celebrations, but it started with how the life of a soda straw sucks and how it was better to be an elevator because it has its ups and downs. Yeah, I know. Then remember last year when I talked about our New Year photos tradition? Well, despite what looked like threatening weather this time, we ventured out to Labrador Nature Reserve…

Happy Sol Invictus

home
This Christmas I was reflecting on a conversation I had with a friend whom I considered to be very smart, but he argued over the legitimacy of my views of Christmas. I had explained that December 25th wasn't really the known date for the birth of Christ, and his reply was of course it was and his proof was that we celebrate New Year’s a week later. So I'm guessing many of you readers never really considered the idea of when or how the tradition of Christmas got started. To me, this is something I love knowing about and decided this year I'd share what I've learned…

Zen and Awol

home
Once I had made a comment on FB and as a result, my brother-in-law questioned my faith in God. I was taken aback because I've always considered myself to be a strong believer. Perhaps it's my perspective that confuses people. Back when I was young, I was raised in a faith that didn't allow for the study of other religions, to the point of ordering you to leave if your beliefs are challenged. I see this is a means of mental control. A trap, if you will, once in you are no longer allowed to question or compare. I knew this to be wrong even as a young teen. So the first chance I got…

Nice Weekend

I had what I'd call a wonderful weekend, despite the lack of photos that I'd normally use to enrich my posts here. It started Saturday morning with a family brunch made by none other than myself. A traditional breakfast from my childhood. French toast. My wife’s parents even showed enthusiasm as I got to work in the kitchen. For once it wasn't my mother-in-law having to do the cooking. I cooked for the parents first and before I finished cooking for my wife…

Corporations Vs. The People Of The USA

home
Ever feel that the cards were stacked against you and it was difficult getting ahead in the USA? Perhaps you may also feel that the big companies are buying up laws that benefit them and not the people of the country? Did you think this was a rather new phenomenon? Well, it's not. In fact it's been worked into the system for quite some time and is only getting worse. Watch this video…

You Only Live Once, But Die Twice

There is a saying that you only live once, but die twice. We all know that when your heart stops, you die physically. But when you have stopped being remembered by anybody then you have died again and for good. It's with this in mind that I'd like to stop and reflect upon my parents. Since I was the youngest child, I may end up being the last to remember them and I'm sure that my son was too young to recall the stories I had told him before I moved…

Doggone It

home
Our friend is very serious when it comes to saving the stray dogs of Singapore. It has shed some light on the issues and I'd like to share what I've found. So where to start? Well, I guess I could start with why we took a trip to an animal shelter and boarding facility called Mutts & Mittens…

Why I'm Not In The USA

home
I was asked recently why I'm not in the USA. I find this almost amusing. There wasn't much there keeping me from wanting to live out my life with the woman I love, other than my son. My desire to be that guiding fatherly figure and to make him happy even caused me to make some bad decisions, including an effort to make things work with my ex-wife. In the end…

March Against Prejudice

home
It's been awhile since I've had reason for a good rant, but what I'm reading from the USA once again makes me sick. The level of intolerance is again a reason I would never want to go back to that a place that harbors and promotes this mentality. So what is so bad? Well, I guess there were a few events planned for this 9/11 in the Washington DC area…

The Evolution of AKAAWOL.com

home
Back in 1999 when I started AKAAWOL.com, I had no idea what I was doing or the direction the site would take. But that's not even going back far enough to really tell you the history of this website. Let’s look back to where the name came from. Back in 1986, I joined the US Navy to get my life back on track because there was a girl I really liked…
