Hungry Ghost Festival

home
In case you have missed it the Hungry Ghost Festival just passed on August 20th. This is a big day in the Hungry Ghost Month that I posted about earlier this month. There are so many cool things involved with this event. There have been concert performances, auctions and even puppet shows (though I didn't manage to get photos of the latter). Oh and of course there is…

A Very Different Funeral Wake

home
Someone's passing is never a good time, but I found a lot to be interested in when my wife and I attended the wake of our good friend’s grandmother. I had been informed that this was a Taoist wake. Some of these cultural differences are amazing to me as I've never been exposed to much more than variations of Christian teachings or atheist beliefs (and atheism doesn't have traditions). As such, offerings are made to keep the spirits happy and also allow believers to pay respects to their ancestors and deceased loved ones. Although I've lived in Singapore for a while now...

Def-initely Awesome Ukulele

home
Wow! That was the first thing that came into my mind and fell from my lips when I finally received my DEF ukulele. It's possible I'm not alone in that thought either. I've taken my new and very shiny red ukulele around town and it draws a lot of looks. I had simply wanted a ukulele that I could practice on in quiet and then still give provide the option to play aloud as I actually got good at anything. I also wanted a slick design that said I wasn't only about playing stereotypical folk or Hawaiian songs. Well, it looks like...
