I Love The Really Real Singapore

Since I was raised in America under the umbrella of free speech, I understand how important it is for society to speak up against injustice. I fully embrace the idea, however, that there are lines that need to be drawn to protect that same society. Now how to determine where those lines should be, I'm not sure, however, I am open to ideas.

I bring this all up because a group posing as an alternative news outlet is lying repeatedly, though they simply claim to be "An online community that provides media coverage without censorship." Of course many Singaporeans will recognise this as the motto of "The Real Singapore" also known as TRS. TRS seems to be anti-PAP (People’s Action Party - the ruling government of Singapore) though when I asked about that, they claimed to be neutral as any news media broadcaster should be, yet the wording in the articles would show otherwise.

Now for a media without censorship, why then would I have been banned from making comments? Well, there were some offensive posts that were outright lies and I got into many heated debates over the content. I pointed out the lies and backed it up with links to show other sides of the story. That may have been why I was banned, or perhaps when I suggested that the TRS must be created by the PAP, because the TRS was making the opposition parties look like complete and total morons and losing any credibility they may have otherwise had. I chuckle even now as I recall posting that, still regardless - and ironically, I might add - I was banned. I've come to discover that I wasn’t alone in this silencing of people who oppose their lies. Many of us feel that this fake news agency are deliberately striving to cause racial friction in a community where so many people get along so well.

You may recall how much the wife and I enjoyed Racial Harmony Day. The idea that a group aimed to undo the kindness generated by events like these frustrates me to no end.

Here we see how a few words could incite a community to foster hatred for their government when it's clear that the facts were not reported. The government is reaching out to the people who need the assistance, not taxing them.

This shows the hypocrisy of the TRS readers’ mentality.

Here Shut down TRS has poked at the stupidity of a post on the TRS Facebook page.

Then while just looking through my FB feed

I find this little thing that got me excited.

Really? Calvin Cheng was a Nominated Member of Parliament in Singapore. Could he have really started a petition to end TRS? So unlike the many readers of TRS, I looked up Calvin Cheng and discovered…

WTF?!? Really? Why would TRS blame an innocent man? Could it be personal or politically motivated? I have no idea but it was further proof that the lies just don't stop. It really is sad when you consider the audience they have built up and all those people that are continually misled.

These are some examples of why we here at akaawol.com support the petition to take down the TRS.

From the petition site:
TRS has been posting articles which incite fear, hatred and xenophobia. On many occasions, it has also plagiarized work and altered content without the initial owner's explicit permission; on many other counts, it had falsely reported news which even TRS had flagged out. The post of Philippine Independence Day was flip flopping and eventually took a stand to target Philippinos, who are largely harmless persons who serve as our domestic helpers, construction workers and in many other retail and f&b sectors. They pay tax through GST like us and the continued incitement of such hate does not bode well for our society. This is not what Singapore stands for. We need something different - even TOC etc is better.

Then from another FB page called 'Squeaky Hammer' I find this:

Oh really? Alex, the creator of this crap site, has challenged the haters of his site?

As a parting note

I'd like to say I do still respect free speech but I do also feel freedom of speech does not mean we can write things online that defame, discriminate or harass someone. In other words, responsible speech and not hate speech. Now you may think I just spent ages writing this out of hate for the TRS and am looking to defame them or something to that extent, making me a hypocrite. But to that I would say I've been truthful and shared others’ and my own screenshots as proof of what I'm writing. I have not left out any portion to deliberately shine the TRS in a bad light. Trust me, they need no help there. And if you feel I’ve been unfair or if you agree with me - I’d love to know! - feel free to comment below.
