I Took Friendship Bracelet Pattern #2726 and Made It My Own

What happens when you take an existing friendship bracelet pattern, figure out how it works, and then start changing it?

In this video, I’m working from friendship-bracelets.net pattern #2726—but rather than simply copying the pattern, I’m breaking down where the strings travel, experimenting with the design, changing the beginning and ending, and turning it into something a little more my own.

One of the skills I really want to encourage is learning how to LOOK at a friendship bracelet and work out what’s happening without always needing the exact pattern in front of you. Start with the strings whose direction is obvious. Once you understand those, the confusing parts often become much easier to figure out.

We also talk about COLOR! 🎨

You absolutely do not have to use the colors shown in a pattern. Try completely different combinations. Look at advertisements, magazines, artwork, or even the floss sitting in your own drawers for inspiration. For this bracelet, I’m seriously considering going with earthy browns and tans instead of the red, blue, white, and yellow used while designing it.

And because we’re creating our own version, I also experiment with the ends of the bracelet, including a simple chevron-style start that helps get the strings into position before the main design begins.

Sometimes changing a friendship bracelet pattern works out WAY better than expected.

Today I’m making friendship-bracelets.net pattern #2726, a 12-string friendship bracelet pattern—and, as usual around here, the finished bracelet isn’t quite what the original pattern intended. 😄

I flipped the design in the middle, but something about it just didn’t look right. So I flipped it AGAIN in the other direction…and suddenly the whole design balanced out.

And I LOVE the result.

The finished bracelet has this really interesting interlocking design that almost looks like waves—or even something mechanical. Once someone pointed out the wave motif, I couldn’t unsee it!

This is also a fantastic bracelet for SEGMENT KNOTTING. I could work one side as far as possible, switch to the other side, and keep bouncing back and forth through the design. The entire bracelet took me just over 1 hour and 20 minutes to make!

I also completely changed the colors from the ones I used while designing the pattern. Instead, I went with reddish brown, darker brown, and two different beige tones. The lighter beige helps the center pop, while the slightly darker beige along the edges keeps everything a little more subdued.

I wasn’t completely sure how those colors would work together when I started.

Now I’m tempted to keep the bracelet for myself. 😂

There was even a moment when I discovered a mistake in the pattern I had drawn and had to stop everything to fix it before that mistake got duplicated into the flipped section. Sometimes designing as you go gets interesting!

This bracelet was also made while YouTube Members watched and chatted with me live behind the scenes. If you’d like to support the channel and join us during sessions like this, hit the Join button next to Subscribe to become a YouTube Member.

💬 What do YOU see in this design—waves, links, something mechanical, or something completely different?
