I Took Pattern 2749 and Made the Middle Go COMPLETELY Off the Rails!

Today we’re not just following a friendship bracelet pattern—we’re taking one apart and seeing what ELSE it can become. 🧵

I’m starting with pattern #2749 from friendship-bracelets.net, but the goal is definitely not to reproduce it exactly.

Mandy suggested trying some purples and pinks, so I’m using the original pattern as a framework, figuring out where all the strings travel, and then completely redesigning the center.

And that’s where things get a little crazy.

The original pattern has some really interesting crossing sections and a surprising amount of symmetry hidden inside it. Once I figured out where the strings needed to end up, that gave me room to experiment in the middle while still being able to transition back into the original design.

The result?

A center section that looks NOTHING like the pattern we started with. I’m seeing a butterfly. Maybe a heart. Maybe something else entirely!

Even better, I realized we can flip the second half in two different ways, meaning there are TWO versions of the finished pattern that work.

I’ll put both versions on akaawol.com so you can choose which one you want to try.

This is exactly what I want you to get comfortable doing with friendship bracelet patterns. You don’t always have to use the colors shown. You don’t have to treat every part of the design as permanent. Once you understand where the strings are going, you can start experimenting and turn someone else’s pattern into inspiration for something new.

And kudos to the original designer for making it obvious that one of the starting colors isn’t actually required for the design. That makes customization much easier!

Now there’s only one problem…

I have to actually knot this thing. 😂

You don’t have to redesign an entire friendship bracelet to make it completely your own. Sometimes you just need to change ONE part. 🧵

This bracelet starts with pattern #2749, a fun 12-string pattern with crossing strings, little shapes along the edges, and colored diamonds running through the design. It almost reminds me of Christmas lights!

But when I reached the middle, I deliberately sent the pattern off the rails.

The idea was to follow #2749 normally, create a completely new section near the center, make that section symmetrical, and then transition right back into the original pattern.

And I LOVE how it turned out.

The original design is somewhat asymmetrical, so suddenly encountering this symmetrical center makes you stop and look at it. There’s almost a butterfly hiding in there before everything returns to normal.

⏱️ Knotting time: about 1 hour 37 minutes

For a 12-string, single-stranded bracelet with this much going on, I was really happy with that time. Segment knotting helped tremendously, and if you’re interested in that technique, watch how I move through the different sections of the bracelet.

I also completely changed the original color palette. Instead of simply copying the colors shown in the pattern, I used plum, purple, baby blue and an extremely dark blue.

Remember: the colors shown in a friendship bracelet pattern aren’t rules.

Changing the colors might be all you need to turn a pattern into something that feels uniquely yours. Or you can go a little further like I did here and redesign one section without having to reinvent the entire bracelet.
