Zigzag Spine Bracelet Design | Breaking Symmetry for a Bold New Look
Sometimes you gotta break your own rules—and today’s bracelet does exactly that.
Instead of flipping halfway through like most of my patterns, this one keeps the chevrons consistently pointing downward, and the main feature is a gray zigzag spine that cuts through the entire design like lightning. ⚡
🧵 Bracelet Setup:
16 single strands (8 going into the kumi)
Alternating solid white + 4-color chevrons
Gray spine zigzags through the middle—not symmetrical
No diamond center—just continuous rhythm and flow
🎨 Design created in GIMP using akaAWOL’s free templates
⏱️ This one’s going to take a while—no shortcuts with flipping!
💬 Want to try your own version? Play with fades, rearrange the colors, or even shift where the spine hits. I’ll have this pattern available soon on https://akaawol.com

What started as a spin on the classic chevron turned into something completely new—a flowing, offset zigzag pattern that almost feels like leaf veins or subtle lightning. This bracelet surprised me in the best way.
🧵 Bracelet Highlights:
- 16 strings (8 into the kumi loop)
- Off-center chevrons with alternating color overlaps
- Four-color fade: light to very dark blue
- Darkest shade barely gets used, but adds depth when it appears
- Pattern doesn’t mirror—each row alternates sides to create the flow
🎨 Built using akaAWOL’s custom graph templates in GIMP
⏱️ Around 2 hours to make (would’ve been faster if I hadn’t paused mid-bracelet wondering “what am I doing?” 😅)
⚙️ Pro tip: String usage is surprisingly even, except for the darkest color—so if you’re short on floss, that’s the one to cut a little shorter.
💡 This design made me realize again just how fun it is to create your own pattern from scratch. Don’t just follow—design. My graph paper templates are free on https://akaawol.com
