I Accidentally Designed the Wrong Bracelet… So Here’s the 16-String Version!

Well… this wasn’t the plan. 😅

After designing and making the 12-string version of this Pinterest-inspired bracelet, I finally pulled out the string bundle I thought I’d been saving for this project.

Turns out it wasn’t 12 strings at all.

Instead of three shades of brown and three shades of green, I had four shades of each—a full 16-string bracelet waiting to happen! So rather than let those strings go to waste, I redesigned the entire pattern to fit the larger layout.

In this video I walk through adapting the original design, adjusting the color fades, and figuring out how the additional strings change the flow of the bracelet. It’s a great example of how a small change in string count can completely alter the look of a pattern.

Tomorrow we’ll knot it and find out whether the larger version is just as enjoyable to make as the original!

What started as a simple plan to use up an old bundle of string turned into something completely different!

This bracelet was inspired by a design I found on Pinterest after friendship-bracelets.net happened to be offline. I originally thought my prepared string bundle would make another 12-string bracelet, but it turned out to be a full 16-string setup. That meant redesigning the entire pattern—and I’m really glad I did.

One of the biggest surprises was how evenly the strings were used. Unlike the smaller version, this bracelet doesn’t complete the diamonds at the top and bottom, which changes the color distribution dramatically. Instead of one color being used much more than the others, nearly every strand ends up being used almost equally.

Even though it’s a larger bracelet, it only took about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. The long chevrons make it move along quickly, and there are only a handful of zigzag knots. If you’re comfortable with all four friendship bracelet knots, this is a great project for stepping into intermediate patterns.
