Turning a Tiny 6-Strand Braid into a Bracelet!

Today’s project is a little different… literally!

Instead of starting with one of my usual string bundles, I’m working with a tiny six-strand braid that was made over a year ago as an experiment. Mandy figured out how to use a kumihimo disc to create an incredibly small braid, and ever since then it’s been waiting for the perfect friendship bracelet pattern.

I think I finally found it.

Using Pattern #61887 as inspiration, I adapted the design to fit this miniature setup. The result is a colorful rainbow pattern that should produce one of the smallest bracelets I’ve ever made. Because the knots are so tiny, the colors flow together differently than I originally imagined, making this a fun exercise in pattern planning and visualization.

Now all that’s left is to knot it and see whether the finished bracelet lives up to the design!

This may be the smallest friendship bracelet I’ve ever made—but it certainly wasn’t the fastest!

Today’s bracelet is based on Pattern #61887, adapted to work with a unique six-strand kumihimo braid that had been waiting in my craft room for over a year. Even though it only starts with six strands (becoming a 12-string bracelet after the loop), the tiny knots mean it still took about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

The finished pattern has a fascinating effect. It almost resembles airflow around an airplane, with warm colors flowing toward the center while the cooler colors frame the outside. Flipping the pattern in the middle creates a mirrored design that makes the bracelet feel much more dynamic than the original.

Because everything is so small, keeping even tension was one of the biggest challenges. The knotting itself isn’t necessarily harder—it’s just much more precise.

One exciting takeaway from this project is that I think it’s worth creating a tutorial for the miniature six-strand kumihimo braid. It opens the door to making many traditional 12-string friendship bracelet patterns in a much smaller, more delicate format.
