Tubular Friendship Bracelet

How much string?

For this project, I have 12 strands that are approx 2.7 meters in length. It really didn’t need to be so long, but I tend to use more than needed rather than risk it running out.

Half of the length gets wound into one of these spools prior to making the kumi (kumihumo braid) that will make the loop for this bracelet.

So how do I count my string? I’d say this is 12 strands of 6 colors. Now I get that people might say there were 24 strands hanging down from the clip. Sure that’s true but I have to find one way to describe this so that when I’m working on an order, buying floss, asking my wife to kumi the loop…it’s consistent.

From there I took the 12 strands and doubled them up to make a thicker string. This pattern could be done with 6 strands but there wouldn’t have been a way to make the kumi loop, which needs a minimum of 8 strands. Another thing about the idea of making this with 6 strands would be just how small it would be! Cute and tiny! However, I made this a bit bigger and it’s also faster and easier to film. So the strands are doubled up.

The Knots

This tutorial only uses the forward and backward knots. So if you can make a chevron, there’s a good chance you can make this. It’s just a bit of keeping track of what side to work on that makes this an intermediate level skill.

And as always, please leave me any thoughts and ideas in the comments. I’ll get back to you as quickly as I can.
