A Zigzag Pattern Unlike Anything I Used to Make
Today’s pattern looked simple at first glance.
It wasn’t.
I started with Friendship-Bracelets.net pattern #6946, expecting a variation on the zigzag bracelets I used to make back in the early 1990s. Instead, I found myself staring at a design that behaved completely differently from anything I was expecting.
The short zigzags, long zigzags, unusual string paths, and unexpected routing made this one of the most challenging pattern breakdowns I’ve done in quite a while.
At one point I was convinced a string had vanished.
Turns out the pattern was right all along.
😅
In this video I:
🧵 Rebuild the pattern from scratch in GIMP
🧵 Trace the string paths manually
🧵 Work through several mistakes and corrections
🧵 Analyze how the pattern actually functions
🧵 Create a custom mirrored variation inspired by mountains
One of the reasons I enjoy these pattern-analysis videos is that they demonstrate the exact thought process behind designing new bracelets. Sometimes patterns make immediate sense. Sometimes they require detective work.
This one definitely required detective work.
The final mirrored version wasn’t part of the original design. I wanted to see what would happen if the dominant movement of the pattern was reflected across the center line, creating a more balanced, mountain-like appearance.
Honestly, I think it turned out pretty cool.
Have you ever come across a bracelet pattern that completely confused you at first but suddenly made sense once everything clicked?

Today I’m making my modified version of Friendship-Bracelets.net pattern #6946.
When I designed this variation, I mirrored the pattern in the center so the zigzags reverse direction halfway through the bracelet. The effect is subtle, but it creates a very deliberate, balanced look. Depending on how you hold it, it almost resembles mountain peaks or a series of valleys running down the bracelet.
One thing that caught me off guard during the build was just how difficult it was to tell where the center actually was.
Because of some issues with my video recording setup, I was filming in shorter segments than usual. After 40 minutes, I was convinced I should have reached the midpoint already. After another 20 minutes, I was even more confused. It wasn’t until I checked the pattern again that I realized I was only minutes away from the center the entire time!
A few observations from making this bracelet:
🧵 Just over 1 hour to complete
🧵 Intermediate difficulty
🧵 Modified from pattern #6946
🧵 Features a mirrored center section
🧵 Lots of unusual zigzag movement
What makes this pattern especially interesting is that it doesn’t follow the classic zigzag structure I’m used to. Traditional zigzags often have very predictable spacing and repetition. This one alternates between long and short movements, creating a rhythm that feels completely different while knotting.
The purple and pink combination also ended up looking fantastic together. The contrast really helps the pattern stand out and makes it easier to appreciate the unusual flow of the design.
One tip if you’re creating your own pattern variations:
If you’re using only a few colors, try matching your digital pattern colors to the actual string colors you’ll be using. It makes following the pattern much easier during the build process.
Have you ever modified a bracelet pattern by mirroring or flipping part of the design?
I’d love to hear what happened and whether it changed the look as much as you expected.
