Designing a Bracelet From Memory!
Can you design a friendship bracelet entirely from memory?
In this video, I challenge myself to recreate one of my favorite bracelet layouts without looking at a pattern. Using leftover string from a previous project, I build a compact design with alternating pink and green fades, working out the color flow one string at a time.
Along the way I talk about:
- How I reconstruct patterns from memory.
- Why I always map the string paths before tying.
- How darker colors can make a design stand out more.
- Why filling in a template helps catch mistakes before you ever knot the bracelet.
- The surprising string order that makes the gradient work.
One thing I really like about this version is the smaller center motif. It’s a subtle change, but it gives this petite bracelet its own personality while making great use of shorter leftover strings.
I’ll be tying this bracelet in the next video so we can see how the finished version compares to the design!

Some bracelet patterns stay with you for decades.
In this video, I tie one of my own original designs—a pattern I’ve been making since the 1980s. Over the years, I’ve used it for bracelets, bags, and even a pillow, but this is the first time I’ve ever made it using single strands of embroidery floss instead of doubled strings.
The result is a bracelet that’s just over 1 cm wide, giving it a delicate, elegant look while still keeping the bold, repeating design I love.
In this video, I talk about:
- How this pattern creates a mirrored “yin-yang” effect.
- Why single strands completely changed the feel of the bracelet.
- Using leftover string from a larger project.
- Why the bracelet took longer than I expected to make.
- Which colors use the most string and how to plan for them.
- My workflow for tying this pattern efficiently.
One of my favorite things about this bracelet is how the pinks and greens work together. The finished design reminds me of a rose blooming against its leaves—something I didn’t fully appreciate until I saw it completed.
I’ll also be updating the pattern on my website so it’s available in this single-strand format alongside the original version.
💬 Have you ever revisited one of your oldest designs? I’d love to hear what patterns you’ve kept coming back to over the years.
