I Rotated Pattern 45… and This Happened

Hey friends! 👋

Today we’re experimenting with Pattern 45 from friendship-bracelets.net — but instead of following it straight… we rotate it counterclockwise and rebuild it from the center out.

What started as an arrow-style design turned into something way more interesting.

Here’s what we changed:

🔁 Rotated the pattern upward
📏 Shifted the guideline to center the arrow tips
💙 Swapped the original green for blue
🩶 Added gray to frame a stretched diamond center
❤️ Let red wrap the entire design

The result?

An oblong center shape with consistent blue width, gray wrapping around it, and red outlining everything. It almost feels architectural — clean lines, strong borders, and a bold focal point in the middle.

🧵 Technique Breakdown

  • 6 strands per repeat section
  • String tracking by logic (two in = two out)
  • Symmetry built by flipping quadrants
  • Beginner-to-intermediate friendly
  • Segment knotting should work nicely here

This one is a great example of how to:

  • Read string paths visually
  • Modify color flow while keeping structure intact
  • Turn arrows into diamonds just by rotating

And if you’re newer to designing — pay attention to how we rationalize string placement. It’s not magic. It’s just following the logic of where threads must travel.

Two blues go in? Two blues must come out. Follow them.

That’s how you start designing instead of just copying.

💡 Design Thoughts

I really like how this came together. The center feels strong without being busy. The red border keeps everything grounded. And the way the grays sit behind the blue gives it depth.

This could look amazing in:

  • A fade
  • Earth tones
  • Pastels
  • High-contrast neon

Now I’m wondering what would happen if we exaggerated the center even more… 🤔

Hey friends! 👋

Today we’re making the bracelet version of the pattern we designed yesterday — Pattern 45 from friendship-bracelets.net — and honestly?

It was remarkably easy.

This 12-string bracelet is mostly:
✔ Simple chevrons
✔ A few light zigzag transitions
✔ A boxed-in blue center
✔ Bold arrows pointing outward

And that’s what makes this one special.

Instead of everything pointing toward the center like some of my recent designs, this one radiates outward. It feels like energy flowing away from the middle — almost like the bracelet is expanding.

🧵 Why I Doubled the Strings

Technically, this could be 6 strands.

But we doubled them up to:

  • Get a thicker bracelet
  • Make knotting feel faster
  • Create a clean, strong kumi loop start
  • Improve overall durability

And honestly… I just love how that loop looks at the beginning.

⏱ Time to Make

This one took me just over 1 hour (about 65 minutes).

It felt faster because:

  • The pattern doesn’t repeat too much
  • The arrows change quickly
  • The center builds and then you’re suddenly heading back out

Sometimes visual variety makes a bracelet feel like it flies by.

🎨 Color Thoughts

💙 Slightly lighter blue
❤️ Deep red
🖤 Black dividing lines

The black separation is key — it prevents the red and blue from competing and gives the whole bracelet more dimension.

The center is this boxed-in blue square wrapped in red, and then the red flows outward into arrows. It’s structured but still dynamic.

🧠 A Quick Tip (Important!)

If you saw me pushing the bracelet upward while knotting — that’s intentional.

👉 Always work close to your clip.

Using a binder clip + board (instead of tape) helps:

  • Keep tension even
  • Avoid sticky residue
  • Improve consistency
  • Make the bracelet cleaner overall

As your bracelet grows, fold it around the board and clip over it. It gets more secure as you go.

Huge game-changer if you’re still using tape.

💡 Future Idea?

What if we reversed it?

What if all the arrows pointed inward toward the center instead of radiating outward?

Teardrop start… arrows converging… interesting middle…

Let me know in the comments if you want to see that remix. 👀
