Mirroring Pattern #27?! Creating a Diamond Friendship Bracelet Design (Real-Time Pattern Experiment)
What happens if you mirror the shadows in friendship bracelet Pattern #27? 🤔
In this video, I experiment with flipping the pattern to create a radiating diamond illusion, where the light appears to shine from the center of the bracelet. The result could turn into one of the most interesting optical effects I’ve tried yet!
Starting from last week’s design, I noticed that the long yellow row splits perfectly down the middle. That opened up the possibility of mirroring the pattern and building a large diamond shape around the center. Of course, I didn’t know if it would actually work… so this is real-time pattern problem solving.
Along the way you’ll see:
- How the shadow direction changes the illusion in bracelet designs
- A trick for quickly filling colors when editing patterns
- How to flip and mirror bracelet patterns to create new designs
- A few small mistakes (and fixes!) during the process
By reversing the shadows and mirroring the design, the bracelet ends up looking like the light radiates outward from the center diamond. I’m really excited to see how this one turns out once it’s actually tied!

What happens when you flip a friendship bracelet pattern in the middle? 🤔
After making Pattern #27 earlier, I noticed something interesting — one of the yellow rows runs straight down the center of the bracelet. That sparked an idea: what if the pattern mirrored itself at the center so the shadows flipped direction?
So I tried it… and the result turned out incredibly different.
Instead of the light appearing to come from one direction, the bracelet now looks like the light radiates from the center, with the brown shadows reversing direction as the pattern flips. It creates a really cool diamond illusion right in the middle of the bracelet.
In this video you’ll see:
- How mirroring a pattern can completely change the design
- The center diamond technique that flips the shadow direction
- Tips for keeping your bracelet close to the clip for cleaner knots
- How I break bracelet making into two 30-minute sessions
- String length planning so you don’t run short on colors
This bracelet took about one hour total to make (two 30-minute sessions). Most of the pattern is beginner-friendly, with just one small section where you need to change knot directions to create the center diamond.
String tips:
- Yellow is used the most — don’t skimp on it!
- Orange is second most used
- Brown is used the least
- I cut each string from ⅓ of a skein and double it to create enough strands for a kumi loop and nice long tassels.

Do you like the original Pattern #27, or this mirrored radiant version better?
And as always…
Don’t get your strings in a bunch.
