Pattern #1207 Bracelet – Harder Than It Looks! (Two-Color Zigzag Challenge)
Today we’re experimenting with Pattern #1207 from friendship-bracelets.net, and right away something interesting shows up. At first glance it looks like a simple two-color bracelet, but once you start tracing the paths of the strings, it becomes clear there’s a lot more going on.
The design builds outward from a small center square, expanding into larger squares with tons of zigzags and directional changes. While mapping the pattern, I started wondering if the design might actually work with many more colors than the original two.
My prediction:
This 12-string bracelet could potentially be turned into a six-color design, with each string following its own path through the pattern. Someone may have simplified it to two colors just to post it on the site.
In this video I:
- Rebuild the pattern digitally to understand the string paths
- Trace how the design grows from the center outward
- Discover the surprising number of zigzags hidden in the pattern
- Test the symmetry by mirroring the design
- Plan a bracelet using black and plum string
Even though we’re making the bracelet with two colors, the structure of the pattern hints that it could be expanded into a much more colorful design later. That might be a fun experiment for another video.
Next step: actually tying the bracelet and seeing how difficult all those zigzags are in real life.

Today we’re tying Pattern #1207 from friendship-bracelets.net, and I’ve got to say… this one is a little trickier than it first appears.
The pattern itself isn’t extremely complicated, but using only two colors makes it harder to follow while you’re tying. When a bracelet uses several colors, it’s easier to tell when a row should stop or change direction because you can visually track when it hits a certain color. With only black and plum, those visual cues disappear a bit, so you have to watch the pattern more carefully.
One thing that helps is the alternating center square. The middle flips color every cycle:
- Plum center
- Black center
- Plum center again
That alternating pattern acts as a reference point so you can keep track of where you are in the design.
Another interesting thing about this bracelet is the subtle “pointing toward the center” effect. Some of the strings travel almost all the way inward, then back outward before ending near the middle again. It’s a really subtle design feature that might not stand out immediately, but it gives the bracelet a unique structure beneath the repeating pattern.
Bracelet details:
- Pattern: #1207
- Colors used: Black & Plum
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Time to make: About 1 hour
This definitely isn’t a beginner pattern, but it’s also not extremely advanced. If you’re comfortable with knot directions and reading patterns carefully, you should be able to tackle it without too much trouble.
One thing I’m really curious about now is whether this pattern could work with more colors. The way the strings move suggests there might be room to experiment with three or more colors, which could reveal more of the hidden structure in the design.
That might be a future experiment.
