Taking One Bracelet Pattern in a Completely New Direction

Today I’m experimenting with a pattern from Friendship-Bracelets.net (#5347) and using it as the starting point for something a little different.

Rather than recreating the original design exactly, I import part of the pattern into GIMP, break down how the strings work, and then start exploring ways to transform it into something new.

The most interesting part comes when I duplicate and flip the pattern—not once, but twice—to create a completely different visual effect. What starts as a simple spiral pattern turns into a design with a much more dynamic flow, and honestly, I think it turned out pretty cool.

Along the way I also work out:

🧵 String paths
🧵 Color distribution
🧵 String count requirements
🧵 How much work each strand will be doing
🧵 Ways to modify existing bracelet patterns into original creations

One of my favorite things about bracelet design is that sometimes a small change can completely transform the finished result. This project is a perfect example of that.

What do you think?

Would you make it as shown, or would you experiment with different color combinations?

Let me know in the comments!

Today’s bracelet started with Friendship-Bracelets.net pattern #5347, one of the classic Greek Waves designs.

But I couldn’t leave it alone.

Instead of making the pattern exactly as written, I modified the layout so that the spirals change direction partway through the bracelet. The adjustment is subtle, but once you notice it, it completely changes the feel of the design.

The result is a bracelet that feels familiar and unique at the same time.

Some interesting things about this project:

🧵 12 strings
🧵 Intermediate difficulty
🧵 Finished in under an hour
🧵 Modified from pattern #5347
🧵 Features spirals that reverse direction throughout the bracelet

One thing I noticed while making it was that some strings worked much harder than others. A few strands ended up significantly shorter by the end, although there were plenty of opportunities to swap strings if needed. It’s definitely something to keep in mind if you decide to make your own version.

This bracelet also brought back a memory from the early days of my bracelet-making journey. Back in the late 1980s, I created a bracelet with a similar purple-and-white color scheme and a winding path design that I was incredibly proud of. Unfortunately, after washing it, the purple dye bled into the white and completely changed the look.

So consider this your reminder:

✔ Test darker colors if you’re unsure about colorfastness
✔ Be careful when washing handmade bracelets
✔ Not all embroidery floss is created equal

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Would you like to see more videos where I take an existing pattern and explore different ways to modify it?

And what direction changes would you try?

Thanks for watching!
